How to talk through a couple disagreement

01. Start with one moment, not every mistake

Pick the specific thing that bothered you. “I felt left out when plans changed” gives your partner something concrete to respond to. Avoid turning one disagreement into a list of everything that has ever gone wrong.

02. Make space for both versions

Take turns describing what happened and how it felt. Ask what your partner meant before deciding what their actions meant. You can understand someone’s perspective without agreeing with every part of it.

03. Ask before bringing other people in

Before sharing a disagreement with a circle, agree on what is okay to share and who can participate. Keep identifying or sensitive details out. Outside opinions can add perspective; they do not decide your boundaries for you.

04. Choose a small next step

Agree on one change you can both try, such as confirming plans earlier or setting aside time without phones. Revisit it together. The aim is a workable agreement, rather than winning the argument.
